Born on January 10, 2007, in the Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir, Sheetal Devi’s life has been nothing short of a miracle. She was born with phocomelia, a condition that left her without arms. Despite the challenges, her indomitable spirit shone through from a young age. In 2019, she was discovered by the Indian Army’s Rashtriya Rifles unit, who provided her with the necessary support for her education and medical care.

Doctors ruled out the possibility of prosthetics for Sheetal, but this did not deter her. Instead, she surprised everyone, including her coaches, by mastering the art of climbing trees using only her legs. This remarkable adaptability laid the foundation for her future success in archery.

The Archery Journey Begins

Inspired by the techniques of Matt Stutzman, an armless archer who uses his legs to shoot, Sheetal’s coaches developed a unique training regimen tailored to her abilities. Her dedication and perseverance paid off when she began training in archery, and within just 11 months, she was ready to compete at the international level.

In the 2022 Asian Para Games, Sheetal made headlines by clinching two gold medals—one in the women’s compound event and another in mixed doubles. She also secured a silver medal in the women’s double compound category, making her the first and only international para-archery champion without upper limbs.

Achievements at the Paralympics 2024

At the Paralympics 2024, Sheetal Devi continued to break barriers. She set a personal best mark of 703 in the individual compound rankings, placing her second overall. What’s even more impressive is the new world record she set in the mixed compound event with her partner Rakesh Kumar, achieving a combined score of 1399.

In the individual women’s compound, Sheetal came agonizingly close to breaking another world record, finishing just one point behind Turkey’s O. Cure, who scored 704 points.

Awards and Recognition

Sheetal’s extraordinary journey has not gone unnoticed. In 2023, she was honored with the Best Youth Athlete of the Year award by the Asian Paralympic Committee. Later that year, the Government of India recognized her contributions to sports by bestowing her with the prestigious Arjuna Award.
